The largest samurai residence that exists in Hagi
This is the samurai estate of the Asa Mori family, one of the Mori family clans that used to rule the Hagi domain. The Hagi estate was a large estate roughly 15,500 square meters in size, but the main house and other structures were demolished after the Meiji Restoration, and only this row house, built in 1856, remains.
This building, five meters in width and 51.5 meters long with a hip-and-gable ceramic tile roof style, is the largest surviving samurai residence in Hagi and has been designated a national important cultural property. The five internal sections of the building have no earthen floors, and the east room in particular uses an elegant architectural style with a tatami-mat corridor, suggesting that it was used for high-status people.
